Read US Supreme Court Brief
John was the lead author of Marriage Equality USA’s friend of the court briefs to the United States Supreme Court in the landmark marriage equality cases of 2013 and 2015. The briefs uniquely presented the personal voices of LGBTQ Americans as they expressed in their own words why the Constitution’s guarantees of liberty and equality apply to them and include nationwide marriage equality:
“We are not just citizens of the state in which we live; we are Americans…. [T]he Constitution ensures that [LGBTQ] Americans, like all other Americans, have the freedom to marry and the right to live free from their government treating them as less than equal because of who they are or whom they love.”
